A Collaborative Zine Making Workshop About Activism

This two hour online workshop provides an opportunity to explore the many diverse forms of activism through creativity. What counts as activism? Do you think of yourself as an activist? What causes do you think are the key struggles in today’s activist communities?

Responding to the theme of activism, we will work together to produce a collective zine (a zine is a small self-published booklet or magazine), with each workshop participant contributing one page of material. The page can be anything - an illustration, some text, a mind map, collage or anything else that is two-dimensional and fits on a page!

The workshop will begin with a short introduction to zines as a medium and some interactive exercises to warm us up for some creative time and generate some ideas for pages. The participants’ responses will be collated into a zine which will later be circulated to participants via the OCA team.

To take part in the workshop, you should make sure you have some of the following to hand (it’s okay if it’s just a pen and some paper!) - some A4 paper or a notebook, pencils, pens (markers, biros, felt tips etc), scissors, glue, collage materials (e.g. magazines or newspapers) and/or anything else you’d like to use.

tThe workshop will be led by Kirsty Fife, who is an activist, organiser of Weirdo Zine Fest and self-publisher of zines about class, fatness, queer identity and DIY cultures. Kirsty has previously delivered zine making workshops for various organisations including UCL, the National Trust, Central St Martins, Mesmac and the National Science and Media Museum. Please note the event is limited to 30 attendees.

Outline:

0-25 minutes: Introduction to facilitator, zines and how they relate to activism

25-50 minutes: Introductions from attendees and ice breaker activities

50-120 minutes: Freeform zine making with regular check-ins/breaks
