About the Event

An exhibition of work by Painting student Arlene Sharp will be on view at Harrow Arts Centre from 3rd – 10th September.

Arlene is currently completing the final module of her Painting degree. Tutor Fiona MacDonald will take a study group to the exhibition on Saturday 3rd September.

Arlene’s exhibition, comprising paintings and photographs is a response to the nearby area of Grimsdyke Woods at Old Redding, Harrow Weald, home at the turn of the century to playwright W.S. Gilbert.

It is inspired by the woodland, particularly the ornamental lake - Gilbert’s lake - and by the writing of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962).

Original ideas to stage the exhibition in the woods were put on hold temporarily due to lake rewilding development planned for the Autumn. Deciding to move to an inside venue, Arlene considered how to bring the space of the woods into the gallery.

Describing her intentions for the curation, Arlene says;

‘It was important to replicate that sense of space, the things we experience when walking through woodland, such as the feel of things overlapping, obscuring or opening up or random points of interest high up and low down on the ground.’

More details about the Painted Space project can be found on Arlene’s website https://www.arlenesharp.co.uk/

Please note, the study visit to Arlene’s show will take place in the morning, this will be followed by a visit to the Wellcome collection, Euston in the afternoon to view the ‘In the Air’ exhibition which explores ‘our relationship with the air around us. Moving freely across borders and through bodies, air is both vital to our existence and a threat to our health.’ (The Guardian). The exhibition features the work of Tacita Dean, David Rickard, Dryden Goodwin, Forensic Architecture, Choked Up, Anna Atkins, Black and Brown Films, Irene Kopelman, Ernst Haeckel, John Evelyn and Matterlurgy.’

And following this tutor Clare Wilson will be at SYP student Mickos' exhibition at The JM Gallery, 230 Portobello Road London W11 1JL from 3pm so that students can make their way there after the Wellcome.

Anyone is welcome, from any course / degree and at any stage. If you are close to London, please do make it along and meet up with Fiona, Clare and your fellow students.

Attendees will be sent Joining Instructions ahead of the day.
