The American born fibre artist Sheila Hicks is one of the world’s most distinguished textiles practitioners. Her investigation delves into colour, form and texture, exploring power and meaning through scale. The work in this exhibition has been stimulated by Sheila’s immersion and collaboration with communities around the world, studying in particular vernacular approaches to a textile practice.

In preparation for this visit you can find more information about Sheila and her work on her website https://www.sheilahicks.com/. You might also be interested in the book Choosing Craft : The Artist's Viewpoint by Diane Douglas and Vicki Halper which cites Sheila and other American craft based artists. For those who wish to, we can meet for lunch and a catchup in the Hepworth Cafe. Then move to the gallery spaces to explore the exhibits. I suggest that during the afternoon we break from the art works to have a cuppa or get some fresh air in the Hepworth Gardens, to share our thoughts and understanding of Sheila Hicks’ work.

  • 12.45pm : Gather in the gallery foyer
  • 1pm : Explore the exhibition spaces.
  • 4.30pm : Final thoughts and conversation
  • 5pm : Gallery closes
