Paintings by OCA painting student Howard Andrews. Howard’s paintings have evolved through a process of interaction with the elements that are intrinsic to the experience of a sense of place. Rather than capturing the surrounding landscape he looks closely at the very fabric that the place is physically made of, an ontological approach to the landscape that draws on writings such as John Dewey’s ‘Art as Experience’ and Yi-Fu Tuan’s ‘Space and Place’. The pebbles, the shells and the other textures to be found in the area become amplified to provide the source material for paintings that reflect the natural beauty to be found in each handful of this Suffolk coast. His paintings to be presented in this exhibition can be seen at:

Photography, books, prints and poetry by Visual Communications student Linda Mayoux. Linda’s photography-based exhibition ‘Tales from the Edge’ draws inspiration from Rebecca Solnit’s writing on ‘Walking Lost’, New Topographics and Abstract photographers, feminist psychogeography of Laura Grace Ford and philosophical and political writings of Mark Harper. Her SYP and recent post-degree work on Aldeburgh and Shingle Street takes a broad and cross-media approach to narrative of place, juxtaposing and contrasting subjective reflections, imaginary texture-based narratives and ‘objective’ socio-political documentary perspectives. Her exhibition gallery can be viewed on-line at: https://www.zemniimages.com/Exhibitions/Shingle-Exhibition-Aldeburgh-May-2023
At 3pm Howard and Linda will be available to discuss their exhibition in the Courtyard Gallery, focusing on their different work processes and some of the joys of producing the collaborative exhibition. And the tensions and stresses in trying to simultaneously preserve their individual artistic identities and put on a public exhibition with marketing/promotional as well as artistic aims in the busy tourist town of Aldeburgh with its many other galleries.
There will also be two 'Meet the Artists' sessions on the Saturday and Sunday from 4 - 6 pm with drinks and nibbles and students are warmly welcome to attend.
