Animated Portrait - a workshop led by Karolina Glusiec

Hello - nice to meet you, I’m Karolina and I will be a visiting artist leading this workshop.

In this workshop we will be working on an A5 size paper to create a hand-drawn animated sequence that can turn into an installation. This workshop is themed around the idea of the portrait - what is it for you? A face, a pair of hands, a silhouette? Think of a significant one or somebody that you would like to draw.

Every portrait has its own meaning. It’s who is going to remain on the painting or the photograph, the moment they’re in while the piece is created, their personality, the feelings their face reflects. There are ways to depict a person without showing their face also - by showing what’s distinctive in the way they move, showing their gestures, maybe something distinctive about their appearance - the way they do their hair, maybe they wear that earring that nobody else does this way?

We will be looking at examples of portraits in art and animation and creating our own piece that will be a moving drawing sequence that you can expand by using your surroundings and photographing it in a particular way.

You will need:

• A5 sheets of paper (you can cut any paper you have into a5/sized - any kind of paper you like to use.
• Drawing materials : charcoal, soft pastels, graphite or ink / paint (make sure you have pencil / sketching materials if you use ink as well.
• Masking tape
