About the Event
Hello - nice to meet you, I’m Karolina and I will be a visiting artist leading the lesson 🙂
In this workshop we will be working on postcard-sized paper to create a moving image loop consisting of our drawings. We will be exploring the idea of presenting a particular place in a relation of time, change, presence - is it an imaginary place? Is it somewhere that you live? Is it a place that you are missing?
This workshop will start from making a drawing of a particular place that you will put on your postcard so start thinking about it now 🙂 If you would like to draw from a photograph - great! If you prefer drawing from imagination or from memory - that’s also allowed - the place on the postcard is the view of your own choice.
The aim of this workshop is to create an animated piece using drawings to blend reality with the imaginary and explore possibilities of animated film made in different environments.
I will be showing you some examples of animated films during the class but feel free to watch these ones to get some idea of what we will be making:
Lucie Levrangi - Mountain Blues (trailer) https://vimeo.com/561565260
Mary Beams - Going Home Sketchbook https://vimeo.com/183332330
Edwin Rostron - Our Selves Unknown https://vimeo.com/94546535
Karolina Glusiec - Velocity https://vimeo.com/83991341
Lara Lee - Wish You were here (excerpts) https://vimeo.com/78219556
As you can see - the place doesn’t have to be a landscape - exterior - a distant view, or a building. A place can be a room, a kitchen, interior of the airport, a waiting room, somewhere meaningful to you. As much as you can imagine the trees and the sky when you’re drawing the landscape, think of any elements of the place if you’re drawing the interior - furniture, maybe some personal items, maybe something else? Why are these important to you?
During the workshop we will be making multiple drawings and I will also show you how to work on your projects after the class if you decide you’d like to spend more time on it 🙂
You will need:
A bunch of postcard-sized paper sheets (you can cut any paper you have into a6/sized - just make sure it’s not very thin - think of something that would feel like a postcard in terms of thickness of the paper - try to have at least 20 sheets)
Drawing materials of your choice - felt tips, crayons, pencils, pastels, pens - I do not recommend charcoal or ink though as they may be a bit too messy or take too much time to dry.
Masking tape
Your phone with a stop motion app downloaded on it - it’s a free software for animating: https://www.cateater.com/ and it’s available for android and iOs for free. Here is also a quick intro on how to use the programme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_Q8IMoV27Q&t=5s&ab_channel=KarolinaGlusiec
You also will need an animation stand - something that would hold your phone so you can animate hands free :) think of a selfie stick you can attach your phone to, or a phone tripod or an overhead arm like this one if you have funds: https://www.amazon.co.uk/WANBY-Overhead-Articulating-Flexible-Microphone/dp/B08XXX4JH7?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A12NL677JBRRGS
You can also use a cardboard box or a piece of a cardboard on top of a pile of books! It really works:

Thank you and see you at the workshop 🙂
Cheers,
Karolina
Everyone is welcome! And please note we will record the workshop for internal use.
