About the Event

Visual art has a fractious relationship with narrativity. Much pre-Modern work is narrative, illustrating Bible stories, classical myths, or historical events and so on.

Since the advent of Modernism narrative has taken a back seat to what might be termed 'moments of expression' that relate more to the maker or their interests than events external to them.

This lecture uses lots of examples to explore how visual art (whether static or time-based) has dealt with narratives and narrativity.

Though focused on visual art the talk touches on literature and movies, too and should be of interest to writers and photographers, especially.

Everyone is welcome!

NB: This lecture was presented in 2019 to the East Of England OCASA group.
