Title: A Drawing is a Map is a Chart is a Score is a Drawing
Length of session: just under 2 hours
Suitable for: all students at all stages
Materials/requirements: Paper in a range of weights, selection of soft and hard pencils, crayons, pastels and other dry drawing materials. Ruler. A place where you can work on drawings that is near your computer.
Content/Description: This session will examine how artists have utilised drawing as a means of mapping, charting, planning, constructing and depicting. A broad overview of drawing techniques, approaches, and uses will start the session, including geographic field techniques, plotting information, diagramming, graphic scores, frottage, and narrative drawing. This will be supplemented with introductions to several artists, such as Paola Tine-Smiech, John Cage, Simon O'Sullivan, Susan Brinkhurst, and Do Ho Suh, as well as Alexander von Humboldt and Earle Brown, to illuminate and illustrate a breadth of drawing practices.
