About the Event
In this session students will learn basic skills to mend a piece of damaged textiles using sashiko techniques.
To give some contextual knowledge around Japanese textile mending techniques we will start by looking at a slide show of historical examples of Sashiko and Boro textiles, looking at techniques and application. Students will then be shown some basic Sashiko stitch techniques which they will try out on scraps of fabric. Students will then be asked to consider and plan out how they might go about mending a damaged piece of clothing or textile item using the knowledge and techniques they have learnt. They will then go on to apply the stitching techniques to bring new life back to their items!
Students should bring with them some scraps of fabric, a piece of textile or garment that is in need of repair, threads ( this could be of different colours), scissors and needles.
There is a supporting padlet with resources and research available here.
