About the Event

This workshop as part of our Summer of Sustainability 2025 will look at creating fiction themed around the climate for a young audience. We’ll look at the difference between writing for different ages, and how Middle Grade fiction (for primary) differs from Young Adult fiction (for teens and above), with examples of climate fiction for these age groups.


We’ll consider how to plan plots and create worlds that are appropriate for these age groups, and spend time in the session both planning and writing. Finally, we’ll look at the climate fiction’s role in the current world, and how both debate around and communication with young people are more fraught than ever.

In the first hour, we will look at extracts of both Middle Grade and YA climate fiction, and then discuss the difference in techniques used between them. Students can join the guided discussion via microphone or text chat,…
