Student Exhibition: Helen Jones

Study Event Date: 9th April 11am- 4.30pm

Delving Deeply: An exploration into what lies beneath the surface through the medium of paint. 

The exhibtion runs from 23rd March to 27th May 2024. Open 10.00 to 1600 hrs daily.

Opening Event 23rd March 12.00-1400hrs-  All Welcome.

Helen works from her studio in Dean Clough, Halifax. She came to painting late in life having spent 40 years working as a nurse. She specialised in palliative care, which heightened her appreciation of nature and the precarity of life. 

“Visits to working stone quarries gave me a focus for this series of paintings. Quarrying has shaped the rural and urban landscape and raises questions for me about damage and conservation. I have been working through my thoughts and feelings whilst exploring the properties of my materials. Rocks and water have become recurring tropes as my inner world tussles with the external. My practice is an ongoing, playful, experiment with paint as a metaphor.

Painting is how I satisfy my innate longing to create. I love the colours and the fluidity and how paint can be manipulated to create different effects. Painting makes me feel alive and purposeful, and I want others to share my sensory experiences of both paint and nature.

Itinerary

-11am- Meet at The Weaver Rooms next door to Crossley Gallery. Coffee, catch up and introductions.

-Go round Helen's exhibition

-12pm- Conversation between Helen Jones & Diana Ali (OCA tutor) & Q&A

-130pm- Lunch in the cafe, The Weaver Rooms.

-2pm- View the Dean Clough collection on show in Crossley gallery downstairs.Then whatever activity with a tutor 2-4pm - E.G.

-3pm- Helen's studio visit. Practical curating workshop. (please note Helen's studio is up some stairs and there is no access.)

-430pm finish

Please can participants bring an A4 sheet of their work - about 10 thumbnails on an A4 in colour - for the workshop.
