Sketching Feelings: Angry & Naked!

2 minute sketch of an angry life model! I was asked to choose an unusual way to hold my medium (charcoal) to represent an emotion. I first tried using light gestures as you see in the hair, but it didn’t convey the models feelings. Instead I held the charcoal in my fist to represent anger and got these amazingly heavy lines. It was awkward at first but then surprisingly fluid and didn’t allow fine detail which felt liberating. I recommend trying this, it adds interest, a good warm up activity!

Hi Alix,

Good to see you've joined us! From what I've seen in the OCA forums, you are one of the furthest along this path and I think people would love to see your work in progress (if you are willing to share, of course)! I'll try to find a chance to fill in my backstory ASAP Katherine but thank you for setting up the group as I'm really looking forward to meeting more like minded secret writers 😊

Your creative journeys...

Maybe you'd all like to share something about yourselves, your passions, what's drawn you to doing an 'art' degree, maybe what your creative path has been/ will be whilst studying your degree, and wherever your work takes you afterwards? (Although don't feel pressured to share stuff if you're not comfortable about it!) What aspects of your degrees have you found challenging, or have somehow stood out? What experiences have you gained from your studies, or other work related to your creativity? What insights can you share about this 'maze' of publishing/ writing/ illustrating/ creativity that you've had so far, that might be helpful for others to hear?

I'd love to hear people's insights!

All the best to you all!

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for your story a few days ago - it sounds like you had a really exciting, if somewhat hectic life before starting your degree! Even if you felt a bit out of your comfort zone with all the people etc., you must have learnt so many things, and heard many people's real stories that don't tend to get published!

Really great to hear that you listened to your inner calling, and decided to get your degree in publishing, so you can finish your stories, whilst learning all the skills you'll need, And getting all the support off the people who know what they're doing, because they're established artists/ illustrators/ creative writers, etc., themselves...

I look forward to seeing some of your work! Well done for working out a way to deal with the problems with lacking motivation - I think a lot of us struggle with that one, and I can definitely relate to it, and having a group of people to help motivate you works wonders every time pretty much! I find, once I was beyond half-way with my degree, but the end not really yet in sight, was quite a tough time to keep going! Am on my second level 3 module now, so almost halfway through level 3 - only one module left after this one, so the end is in sight, and the fruits of my labour is starting to appear, as well as now getting a much clearer idea of where my creative work is actually going!

Thanks for the tip from your writer friends - it does make sense really, that they want to know that you've got more books lined up, because they want to sell more than just 'one-hit-wonders' - they want their bit of money from your name as well! :-) Well done for believing in you - there's nothing wrong with flower words! I always felt like I had the opposite problem in 'my circles', that I didn't know enough flower words to be able to keep up with them! But we are all more than just where we originate from!...

Keep it up!

All the best, Katherine
