Welcome to the group! You can connect with other members, get updates and share photos.

The Kahlo Collective is a group for students at all levels who are living with chronic pain. We run short group sessions which are a chance to get together and share work and experience. There is no pressure to present - if you would like to attend and join in the discussion or simply listen that's fine. The group originated in the Drawing department, with thanks to PL Emma Drye and to tutor Helen Rousseau who facilitates the sessions.

Reducing setbacks

Hi, I started Painting Degree in June. I absolutely love it, best thing I ever did! However, I feel the number of setbacks (chronic pain) I'm having is increasing: the pain becomes overwhelming and I 'waste' daysand days feeling really miserable. I'm trying to come to terms with the fact that I can't paint as I'd like to (bigger and bolder, more freely). I am trying to paint within my health limitations now but I feel this window is getting smaller and smaller as the pain is always threatening to get worse. Has anyone else, perhaps further on in their course, had this experience, and how have you managed it psychologically?

thanks,

Margaret

Hello Margaret, I'm sorry to hear about the level of pain you have been experiencing and how it is impacting your world, in particular your course/painting. I don't have any gems of wisdom on pain management I'm sorry to say except working within your window of tolerance as you are doing sounds like a good plan. I can only imagine the frustration at not being able to paint as you would like to at present. I'm hoping someone here is able to help. It might be worth seeing if you are under a health team that has an Occupational Therapist as maybe they can assist - part of their role covers maintaining/improving engagement in meaningful activity and painting sounds important to you. I'm hoping that your pain levels improve soon.

Session tonight.

Hi there, thanks for a lovely session tonight. Sorry I missed the end. I don’t know what was decided about keeping in touch more regularly but I’m happy to host a what’s app group or co-working sessions or some sort of club. For instance have a small group of first years in all different courses in a what’s app group and we meet weekly for a co-working session or a more interactive session like a sketchbook club or a social. I find it helps me to stay on track with my studies and inspires me to research new ideas that the introduce me too.

So depending on what was decided let me know if this is of interest to anyone 🥰

Hi Roro, I'm not first year, but I attend the Kahlo Collective. I would be really interested in a weekly creative group. I love being creative in a group, I find it always inspires me.

Hello!

Hi there, just introducing myself. I’m Roro, I’m in the first unit of a BA in Illustration. I’m an ME and Fibro sufferer and looking forward to any events you have to meet up with other creatives with chronic pain conditions 💕

Hi Roro, thanks for introducing yourself and welcome! I forgot there was a discussion page here so it would be great to chat to everyone more. I'm Cinnamon and am just starting 1.2 of Fine Art and have ME (plus assorted extras!) too. I really enjoy the Kahlo Collective sessions when I can make it so hopefully meet some of you at the next one 😊
