Student Stories: Lorna Hall

Writer's picture: OCA Student AssociationOCA Student Association

Lorna is studying OCA's stage 3 Textiles course External Projects.

"I am in my mid fifties and I work in childcare. A mother of three young adults and a carer for a father in-law with dementia."

Find out more about her experience as a student of OCA below.

What is your previous educational experiences and what drew you to OCA?

I studied fine art in Madrid as well as jewellery design and fashion. When I became a mum I focused on my family and put my art tools away. Once my children grew up I felt I needed to reconnect with my real self, art was what was missing in me. I researched different courses and OCA fitted in with all my needs. I realised I could work as well as study and manage my time accordingly. I also have a silent disability so OCA and their team have been very supportive.

Can you describe your OCA journey?

Life can get hard at times so being able to adapt and be flexible when studying is important. A couple of years ago I had to travel back and from to Spain to be with my dad when receiving palliative care. My tutor Amy Tidmarsh was incredibly supportive and helped me achieve my highest mark yet. I will always remember that period of my studies with great fondness as it was a very hard time but also very rewarding personally. That time helped define my textiles practice.

What was the Tutor and/or Peer Support like on your course?

A constructive comment on Instagram from previous tutors like Faye Hall sometimes gives me the push I need in the right direction. I have made invaluable connections with peers on social media too and this helps me not to feel isolated.

What does studying with OCA mean to you?

Studying with OCA allows me to invest in myself. As a person whose first language is Spanish, I have become more confident in writing in English. The degree paper is important to me as I will be able to hopefully change my career path. What is more important to me is the journey so far. Studying has allowed me to have another outlet in my life where everything and anything is possible. I can be b0niets with no judgements.

What's next?

Hopefully to start my own creative business.

Any advice?

Go a step at a time, don't look at the whole picture, break it down. Be strict with your time but also kind to yourself. Remember it's going to be a long journey but one which is enriching to you.
