Student Stories: Sarah Davis

"I am Sarah, an artist and full time reader development librarian. I would describe myself as a curious artist using my art to connect with the world and as a way to tell personal stories . I am dyslexic so drawing is a way for me to communicate. My practice is concerned with recording my life, sometimes through memories and often with place and nature."

Read about OCA BA (Hons) Drawing Alumna Sarah's learning journey below.

What is your previous educational experiences and what drew you to OCA?

I have always drawn but being dyslexic I never thought I would be able to study. I did my A-levels in my late 20’s - years later I felt brave enough to enrol with the Open College of the Arts.

Can you describe your OCA journey?

I loved every minute of my degree journey, the final course was challenging as I was dealing with my mother’s dementia diagnosis, she passed away as I was submitting my final course. My greatest achievement was writing my dissertation something I never thought I could do.

Can you describe the tutor/ peer support at the OCA?

I have had fantastic support from all my tutors and my drawing peers. I am particularly indebted to Clare Wilson who supported me during a difficult time when I was close to leaving.

What does studying with OCA mean to you?

It meant so much. I have discovered so much about myself and what sort of artist I am. I have had an amazing journey.

Any advice?

Just keep going and believe in yourself.

Where can we find you?
