Student Stories: Sarah Jane Shepherd

"Hi, I'm Sarah Jane, a mid 40's BA Hons Illustration student who works full time as a Chartered Surveyor in Suffolk."

Read about Sarah Jane's learning journey below.

What is your previous educational experiences and what drew you to OCA?

I obtained a degree in Conservation and Environment in 2007, then studied to become a Chartered Surveyor, and have worked as this for nearly 20 years. I always wanted to pursue my love of drawing, painting and creating and after completing the Foundation Drawing course with OCA, so went on to start the BA Illustration course in Sept 2024.

Can you describe your OCA journey?

Once I got the hang of how everything works e.g. how to log your work on OCA Spaces, and I scheduled in time each week to study, I have found the experience really positive.

Can you describe the tutor/ peer support at the OCA?

Robyn Wilson-Owen was a fantastic tutor in the first unit and her 1:1 sessions with me helped me gain confidence in studying on my own.

What does studying with OCA mean to you?

It enables me to study and expand my skills and understanding whilst still working full time. I don't think this would be possible for me without the OCA. I especially like that the students are from all age groups, backgrounds and places.

What's Next?

Once I complete my BA Illustration (some time off but I am determined to make it!) I hope to have a change of work somehow and do something I like for a living for the first time.

Any advice?

Be disciplined with your time, make sure you stick to regular study periods if you can. Keep your learning log up to date and record everything you have tried, good and bad. Self reflection is very important. Overall (and I am guilty of forgetting this) remember why you are doing it - for me it is ultimately to enjoy and learn - sometimes I take it a bit too seriously.

Where can we find you?
